Stemco Brake Drum

Heavy cast iron brake drums add unnecessary rotating weight, and the Stemco Brake Drum addresses that issue with a lighter hybrid construction. This drum uses Stemco’s CentriFuse design, fusing a steel outer shell to a cast iron braking surface so weight can be reduced without sacrificing durability. Because the steel jacket carries much of the structural load, the iron liner is better supported through repeated heat cycles, limiting the cracking associated with full-cast drums. Reducing drum weight at the wheel end lowers rotating mass, which helps reduce stress transferred to suspension and brake components during operation. To maintain smooth braking as the drum wears, the braking surface is precision-machined to keep the drum running true and minimize pulsation at the pedal. The result is a lighter Stemco 87101B drum that maintains stable braking characteristics over its service life.
